THE CRAZY 20s IN ARRIAGA
In 1924, Fritz Lang undertook one of his most ambitious film projects: Los nibelungos, inspired by the epic poem “The song of the Nibelungs” and comprised up of the films The death of Siegfried and The revenge of Kriemhild. Arriaga Theatre and the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa offer a special concert in which the BOS, conducted by Nacho de Paz, performs the music from the first of the two films in this project, The death of Siegfried (in the original “Siegfried Tod”), while the film is projected on a giant screen.
Larger than life, inspired by mediaeval Norse legends and enriched by the striking imagery of German expressionism, The death of Siegfried is a monumental performance. On presenting the story of Siegfried, Fritz Lang took full advantage of cinematic innovations and the creative vision of the artists of the production company Decla-Bioscop. The imposing trees, the treasure-filled caves, and the seventy-foot dragon were built to life-size scale in the studio’s workshops. Special effects technicians devised new formats and optical tricks when the perspective of the action was too immense to be reduced to the confines of a studio. The result – Siegfried – astounds, not only for re-narrating the intriguing 13th-century legend but also for the magical technical resources that brought it to life 700 years later.
Considered a masterpiece of German silent films, its soundtrack was composed by Gottfried Huppertz, whose music we were able to enjoy not long ago at the Arriaga in the concert-screening of Metropolis. His composition adds to the scenes as well as the characters. Barely three years after the centenary of its premiere, with the film restored and thanks to the recovery of the score preserved in the German Cinematex, we can now see this jewel of cinema on the big screen of Arriaga Theatre together with a live orchestra.

MISSA SOLEMNIS

La Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao, la Sociedad Coral de Bilbao y el Orfeón Pamplonés se unen bajo la batuta del maestro Nuno Coelho para presentar esta obra maestra monumental. Aunque compuesta para una liturgia cristiana, la obra trasciende lo religioso para abordar temas universales de humanidad y redención. A lo largo de la obra Beethoven explora una amplia gama de emociones, desde la solemnidad y la contemplación hasta la exaltación y la celebración lo que le dota de una profundidad emocional extraordinaria. Hay pasajes absolutamente desafiantes para los intérpretes, la tensión de las notas tenidas en el coro, los contrastes dinámicos y temáticos, lo virtuoso de la escritura orquestal… todo ello hace que la Missa Solemnis continúe siendo un referente en la música sinfónica, inspirando a oyentes y músicos con su belleza y poder emocional a lo largo de los siglos.
COROS DE CINE – CONCIERTO PARTICIPATIVO

‘Coros de cine’ es un concierto participativo para coro, solista y orquesta en el cual se interpretarán temas de algunos de los títulos más emblemáticos de la historia del cine, como Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Titanic, Saving Private Ryan o Empire of the Sun, entre otros.
Este proyecto colaborativo permitirá que cantantes amateurs de Bilbao y alrededores se preparen al lado de profesionales de la música para debutar en el escenario del Auditorium de Euskalduna Bilbao.

Si hubiera una lista de hits en la música de los últimos 200 años, el concierto de Tchaikovsky, con su romanticismo arrollador y la fuerza de sus melodías, figuraría sin duda en los primeros puestos. Una obra a la medida del virtuosismo de Martín García. El carácter grandioso de este programa de apertura se completa con la brillante sinfonía “Órgano” de Saint Saëns y Oceans, de la islandesa Sigfúsdóttir, inspirada en la inmensidad de los mares.

El mar como inspiración

No abandonamos la evocación del mar, esta vez como hilo conductor: evidente en La mer, el más célebre poema sinfónico de Debussy, y sugerido junto a la Eneida de Virgilio en Unda maris, del bilbaíno Javier Quislant, obra con la que ganó el prestigioso Premio Reina Sofía en 2023. Una sensación de inmensidad, de lo estático en permanente movimiento, que se percibe también en la música de Sibelius, con la reinvitación a Sergei Dogadin, uno de los triunfadores de la pasada temporada.
